It All Falls Down

It is October 1st. We are in the last quarter of probably the strangest year in my lifetime, which is not that short, but not quite that long either. I’m just saying, I’ve seen somethings. Everyone is talking about the Presidential debate and election, pandemic and flu season at the same time (yeah, ish just got real because you can have them at the same time), racism, sexism, all of the other isms, climate change, wealth gaps, immigration… I mean the list goes on and on. It’s like, how did we get here?  How did we not see this coming?

In all honesty, I believe all of ‘this’, whatever it is, has been brewing for a long while. We have simply ignored it. Yes. None of the problems I have stated are new. They have been around for decades. Even my 100-year-old great great aunt can spew off moments and experiences in all the above categories at some point in her life. I’ve experienced just a fraction. So, what makes this time different then the past 100+ years?

I had to ask myself these questions and I have not come up with much of an answer other than our mere existence has been attacked. Our comforts have been slowly chipping away and now, we are at a breaking point. There is uncertainty in every aspect of our lives, not just one. Right now, every single decision we make is the result of someone else’s decision made years ago. Similar to skipping rocks in a lake or pond, the ripples spread endlessly. It just happens that ripples thrown by all these issues have finally overlapped, and we are all stuck in a boat that is violently rocking.

We have seen the tragedies when currents rock a boat too violently. It capsizes possibly drowning all occupants.  Or many fall overboard and have to swim to safety, some possibly drowning in the process. Since we are all in this boat together, its now up to us – each one individually and collectively – to keep everyone from drowning. To survive this rocking. To stop the rocks being thrown and get back to calmer shores. Because if we do not, its all going to fall.

" We buy our way out of jail, but we can't buy freedom; We'll buy a lot of clothes when we don't really need em; Things we buy to cover up what's inside; Cause they make us hate ourself and love they wealth" ~ Kanye West
