Random Thoughts

Have you ever taken the time to really assess your thoughts and/or the things that cross your mind throughout the day? Are they ever jumbled and sporadic like mine? Or are they calculated and focused?  I'm sure the average person has some form of focus, but as for me...I couldn't focus even if I had brain zappers that shocked me every time I didn't! For instance, here's what I am thinking right now..."I have to go to the bathroom, but I should probably wait until I finish typing all of this stuff out. Man, I want some Starbucks. That would be so tasty right now. Maybe I should've showered today just in case. My hands are cold. Butterflies are beautiful!"  That took less than five minutes and I sanitized it, so imagine if I recorded 30 minutes of my brain dabbling.

Part of me wonders why I don't think of greater; more loftier things like curing cancer, or advocating against injustices. Every day, I pass by an abortion clinic. I only know it’s there because of the dedicated protestors.  They have signs (some of which are quite disturbing) walking back and forth praying. I don't really know what to feel about their cause (as I believe a woman should make her own decisions, but don't believe in children/babies being hurt either) yet, I admire their tenacity.  They have one thought. One focus. One goal and one mind to combat what they deem to be a social injustice. And I’ve taken notice.

Now that I really settle down to think about it (I couldn’t hold it any longer, I had to go bad), I cram my life with hundreds of goals that require thousands of activities. With every hour of the day, these activities desiccate any possibility of focus and imagination, such that my actions lead to more chaos and less production and effectiveness. Ergo, I murder the vision of greatness for my life and the vitality to live it.  And that my friend…is insane.

Hence, this week…I’m challenging myself to live a life of sanity. I am going to pick one thought or goal, and give it my undivided attention.  No distractions. Whenever an activity comes along that doesn’t align with the task at hand, ignore it. Join me in this fight against random thinking and chaos, so that, together, we can collectively change the world! Now, I just have to think about what to focus on. :/ Wish me, luck!

Change your thoughts and you change your world. ~Norman Vincent Peale
